The following Manifesto is designed to be a starting point for community engagement and adaptation, supporting industry alignment and positive social impact. As a cyborg anthropologist, I have studied human-machine interaction and its social and business implications for decades. Below is a distillation of the core values I have encountered from interviewing and working with thousands of global citizens.

Readers of this manifesto are encouraged to iterate upon it, reference it, and otherwise apply it provided the usage follows the creative commons definitions of Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0.

Manifesto for Sustainable AI

We are entering the AI era. AI presents some of the greatest opportunities for—and risks to—our industry and society we have ever seen. Together with AI, we can solve seemingly ‘unsolvable’ problems and create exponential value.

It is not possible to see the future, yet inaction is not an option. To set direction, we’ve articulated priorities amongst these competing objectives:

Augmentation over automation: pair humans and machines rather than replacing people
Talent over technology: invest in AI fluency and critical thinking before purchasing more software
Ethics over economics: establish fair and explainable AI before seeking immediate cost-savings
Voice over volume: creativity and authenticity matter more than cheap content

Decision Principles:

AI and data sovereignty: Create local AI value for local people. Data storage and processing should occur within the borders of the region where possible.
Iterate towards exponential value: use AI to save money and time, but re-invest some or all of those savings into future innovation—and avoid being commodified.
Measure what matters: Use AI for real value. Go beyond cost and efficiency—track impact on creativity, customer trust, employee engagement, and long-term resilience.
Design for context and equity: go beyond one-size-fits-all approaches to create authentic, inclusive, and fair models.
Minimize ecological impacts: use AI in an efficient way and prioritize clean, low-energy and low-water usage systems.
Lift each other up: contribute to a common pool of talent and resources in the industry.
Compete on an even playing field: fiercely defend our clients and citizens by setting guardrails for ethical use of AI, and only do business with others who do the same.
Follow the data: ensure that data is protected throughout data supply chains, and that AI processing is accurate and visible

Manifiesto de IA Sostenible

Entramos en la era de la IA. La inteligencia artificial ofrece algunas de las mayores oportunidades—y riesgos—para nuestra industria y sociedad que jamás hayamos visto. Junto con la IA, podemos resolver problemas aparentemente insolubles y generar valor exponencial.

No es posible prever el futuro, pero la inacción no es una opción. Para marcar un rumbo, hemos establecido prioridades entre estos objetivos en competencia:

Aumento más que automatización: combinar humanos y máquinas en lugar de reemplazar personas
Talento más que tecnología: invertir en fluidez en IA y pensamiento crítico antes de adquirir más software
Ética más que economía: garantizar un uso justo y explicable de la IA antes de buscar ahorros inmediatos

Principios de Decisión:

Competir en igualdad de condiciones: defender con firmeza a nuestros clientes y ciudadanos estableciendo límites para el uso ético de la IA, y hacer negocio solo con quienes actúan de igual manera.
Seguir los datos: proteger la información a lo largo de toda la cadena de suministro de datos y asegurar que el procesamiento de IA sea veraz y transparente.
